While closely related to jazz and its origins, blues has in itself become a distinctive genre. As the music spread and became more popular, thanks in part to artists such as Louis Armstrong, new sub-genres developed including New Orleans jazz, soul jazz, jazz rock and jazz funk. Improvisation allows musicians to be spontaneous and delight audiences with unexpected and vibrant performances. Many followers of jazz agree that improvisation is what sets it apart from so many other genres. A few of those original elements that have stood the test of time include poly-rhythms, syncopation and most importantly improvisation. It originated in the early 20th century when African-American communities based in the south of the US began to combine elements of their traditional Africa-based music with those found in European styles. Jazz, like so many other musical styles, has evolved over the years. Directed by Diane Paulus and choreography by Chase Brock. Sara Bareilles and Jessie Nelson's new musical Waitress is featuring songs and lyrics by Sara and inspired by the beloved 2007 film by Adrienne Shelly.
